Marlborough 1st XI (0) v Bristol Uni (13) January 19, 2008 |
| A
dedicated 9 travelled to Bristol on Saturday with the hope that determination
and experience
would be enough to triumph over the young students for a second time this
season. Within minutes however, Bristol Uni had scored with a lucky shot where the ball mysteriously found its way into the roof of the goal. This opened the floodgates as some more deserving goals rapidly followed. Marlborough managed to gain possession for a period in the first half and played some superior hockey. With numbers against them however, it was unrealistic for lone striker Jus Renwick to single handily break through the University's defence. Caroline Jarvis remained focussed in midfield as she distributed the ball, leading to some excellent play being worked down the wings by Jo Gay and Catherine Manley. In the second half Marlborough were resolute in pushing forwards and continued to have attacking spells. Encouragement came from Helen Dobie as she stepped up to fill a hole in the midfield. Despite valiant efforts from defenders Jo Debond, Caroline Maddocks and Katie Morton, they were heavily outnumbered when Marlborough were repeatedly being caught on the break. The onslaught continued as the opposition became increasingly motivated by the possibility of a plethora of hat tricks. Keeper Sue Keevil was a persistent an annoyance to the students by denying more goals and slowing the inevitable thrashing. Unfortunately just as Marlborough’s come back goal was looking imminent and possibly the start of a grand turn around, the full time whistle was blown. |
