Marlborough 6 - 0 Clifton Ladies 3's - Saturday 3 October
Recently dubbed ‘The Emeralds’ due to their green strip and sponsorship from Deacons Jewellers, Marlborough Ladies found some early-season form on Saturday 3 October against Clifton 3s (Bristol).
Playing in a new formation, Marlborough began the game strongly and quickly took control over a young, energetic Clifton team. Early possession and excellent attacking play was rewarded with a goal from Alex Sharpe. Marlborough continued to dominate with some slick passing up both sides of the pitch which kept the Clifton defence busy. Clever positioning and passing enabled Marlborough forward Catherine Manley to score two further goals, giving the Emeralds a 3-0 lead at half-time.
After the break, Clifton stepped up the pressure but were unable to worry the solid Marlborough defence. Further long periods of Marlborough possession and attacking play brought another goal from Catherine Manley, for a hat-trick. Despite the energy of the young Clifton team, the Emeralds then scored a fifth goal. In the dying moments of the game, Marlborough won a penalty corner from which Alex Sharpe scored her second goal of the day to take the victory to 6-0.
