Marlborough 4 -3 West Wilts (A) - Saturday 23 October

After a disappointing result the previous week, Marlborough were looking to bounce back with a more structured, clinical performance against West Wilts. Having been involved in a preseason triangular tournament with one another, both teams felt as if they had a game plan suited for victory as both teams enjoy a similar brand of expansive, free flowing hockey.

The game was even in the early stages, with good attacking and defending being displayed by both sides. Marlborough began building the pressure on their opponents but found themselves somewhat shell shocked after a goal mouth scramble led to the West Wilts striker sliding the ball in from a sharp angle. Marlborough continued their attacking play but found themselves further behind after West Wilts broke with pace and numbers and found the net. 2-0 at halftime, not the response Marlborough was looking for.

The 2nd half started with Marlborough, once again, finding themselves with a deficit of 3 goals to nil and looking like they were beaten. Looking for inspiration and luck Marlborough could just not create the necessary chances until, after another goal mouth melee, Jonny Round’s reverse stick strike found the goal to cut the arrears to 3-1. Galvanized by renewed hope, Marlborough pressed further and after a display of deft dribbling, Captain Richard Holman fired a shot past the keeper into the top corner. 2-2 game on!

Marlborough, fired by renewed self belief relentlessly pressed for the equalizer. The opportunity arose after the goal bound ball was stopped illegally, resulting in a penalty flick which was converted by Anil Sud. With the scores now level, Rich Holman capped a lionheart performance with another spectacular run and near post finish through the keepers legs, to cement his man of the match performance. Marlborough held firm with solid tackling from Matt Way and Sam Evans, completing a superb team performance and strengthening Marlborough’s bid to climb further up the table.
