Marlborough (B) 1- 0 Swindon B - Saturday 30 October
This was a hard fought contest against one of our main rivals for promotion. Having failed the first real test of our character against Shepton Mallet a few weeks ago, we passed this challenge well. Swindon are a lively and keen side and we knew they would come at us early and so our strategy was to hold firm and absorb the pressure and look to counter attack only when chances presented themselves. Everyone played to this script perfectly and Tom Chadwick finished well to put us 1 up half way through the first half. We were to hold this lead to the final whistle thanks to a number of excellent saves from Kelvin Gabe and good midfield performances from Gill and Patterson - the latter picking up Man of the Match, despite a goal mouth miss near the end, that would have put Emile Heskey to shame.
The team were solid and strong and a character and determination is starting to show through. The younger lads - Wych, Josh M and Josh E are gaining in the confidence that their natural skills deserve. Charlie D will come on too. The challenge this season will be to win the few big games and leave the easier ones to take care of themselves.
